The Malayan, or common, water monitor is native to the Greater Sunda Islands and coastal areas of the Bay of Bengal and the South China Sea from Sri Lanka through southern China. The Dumeril’s monitor can be tamed over time. Most African species, including the white-throated or Cape monitor (Varanus albigularis), belong to the subgenus Polydaedalus. It can grow to around five feet long and is a dark brown color with lighter bands on its back.
