Herring and mackerel make up the bulk of the Pacific dolphin's diet and share the deep water with large fish species like tuna and swordfish. Within the dolphins' elongated jaw bone sits numerous conical teeth (some species have as many as 130 teeth in each jaw).
Bottlenose dolphins generally do not need to dive very deeply to catch food. They are, however, capable of diving to some depth. Bottlenose dolphins in the Pacific Ocean share their habitat with otters, seals and sea lions. Bottlenose dolphins are found in warm water all over the world. In the Pacific Ocean, they are found as far north as Japan, and as far south as Australia. Under experimental conditions, a trained dolphin dove 547 m (1,795 ft). With the assistance of international volunteers, we use boat-based observation, underwater video, and acoustic listening devices to gain a deeper understanding of dolphin behavior.
