The sound character of the ZEN DAC is something I’d describe to be typical iFi.
This is a superior method compared to the traditional single-ended circuit approach to audio gear. Go ahead, put it in your hands and marvel. Firstly, I love the way then Zen looks. Metal housing, big analogue volume knob, and nothing unnecessary. The build of the Zen is the first thing that will jump the f*** out at you. Overall, I think the ZEN DAC has a pretty interesting design and it certainly does offer a fair number of features given the asking price and how compact the unit is, but the limited number of inputs will be a sore point for some. I have installed the new firmware on the Zen Dac, and I'm using the balanced 4.4mm jackstick.

The iFi ZEN DAC uses a balanced design for the analog stage. The size is convenient for a desktop but make no mistake, the Zen is not designed for portability. This baby is hefty. Sound. It’s clean and simple, wabi-sabi style.

The iFi Zen DAC costs less than £130 and can reproduce these tracks to a level that is at least on par with my CD player. 100+ Head-Fier. Imagine flopping out of the womb at a cool 25 lbs. I bought the CD version of an album to experience the ultimate sound quality but thanks to the iFi Zen DAC I can now experience the best quality through a music streaming service. iFi is good at dishing out surprises, a company that love to create tiny little boxes offering hi-tech specifications at such low prices.
